The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) convened a two-day political stakeholders workshop with the theme “OUR DEMOCRACY: THE WAY FORWARD.” The event kicked off today, the 4th of February 2025, in Osogbo, the state capital of Osun. The workshop saw the participation of various political parties, with IPAC Chair, Honorable Pastor Akande Victor, extending a warm welcome to all political chairmen and party executives in attendance.
Hon. Akande emphasized the importance of the workshop in enlightening the public about the true essence of democracy and restoring the masses’ faith in Nigeria’s democratic system. The event attracted distinguished personalities, including a representative of the Commissioner of Police and a top-ranking officer representing the Civil Defense Commandant.A highlight of the workshop was the insightful address by special guest Dr. O.T. Odesola, from Awolowo university Ile ife, who focused on the detrimental practice of vote buying and its implications for the future of democracy.
Dr. Odesola defined vote buying as the exchange of material or money for votes and highlighted how this issue undermines the integrity of our democracy. He urged attendees to shun vote buying and emphasized the need for civic education to prevent individuals from participating in such corrupt practices.Dr. Odesola pointed out the impact of vote buying on past elections in Ondo, Ekiti, and elsewhere, stressing the urgency for stakeholders to devise strategies to combat this menace. He raised thought-provoking questions about the motivations behind vote buying, citing poverty, disillusionment with the electoral process, and other factors.
Furthermore, Dr. Odesola underscored the importance of political parties having clear agendas and manifestos to foster community development and discourage unethical practices. He highlighted the significance of voter education and concluded by warning of the severe repercussions of vote buying on national sovereignty and the democratic future of the country.
The Osun State Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) echoed Dr. Odesola’s sentiments, urging all political parties present to uphold integrity and resist the temptation to compromise their principles for personal gain. He emphasized the need for collective responsibility in safeguarding the democratic process.In conclusion, the workshop left participants with a renewed commitment to combatting vote buying and promoting transparency in the electoral system. It was a productive and enlightening gathering that underscored the importance of upholding the principles of democracy for a brighter future.
